  • Name the bones which make up the foot.
    • Hind of the foot consists of the Calcaneus, Talus, Navicular and the Cuboid.
    • Forefoot consists of the 3 cuniforms, 5 metatarsals and 14 phalanges (these bones make up the toes of the foot).
  • What is the bony architecture of the foot?
    • (the foot consists of 26 bones articulating with each other in more than 33 places) form arches, longitudinal and transverse.
    • These are important in absorbing shock loads and balancing the body.
  • What is the foot?
    • Mobile weight bearing structure.
  • List three movements of the foot and give examples.
    • Dorsal flexion (towards body). E.g. Doing a movement such as toe touch.
    • Plantar flexion (to the floor or pointed). E.g. Standing on your tiptoes.
    • Inversion (Rolling inward). E.g. Rolling your foot Inward.
  • Discuss 4 common problems which can occur.
    • Plantar fascial strain (Aching on the sole of the foot caused by incorrect landing from jumps).
    • Flat feet-pes planus (Aching under big toe and along heel caused by unsuitable footwear).
    • Rolling in on ankles-pronation (Results in poor turn out and knee problems).
    • Rolling out on ankles-supination.
