(Q1) LESSON 2

Cards (23)

  • POLLUTION - Refers to the accumulated  contamination of different  settings in the environment :  atmosphere, water and land
  • AIR POLLUTION
    • It refers to the  contamination of air in  the environment
    • It may cause  suffocation or difficulty  in breathing
  • WATER POLLUTION - Is due to the  chemical, biological and all  sorts of physical  pollutants that  degrade the  quality of water.
  • EUTROPHICATION: Is the excessive amount of nutrients in water. It is characterized by  increased plant and algae growth or algal bloom that turns clear  water to green.
  • NOISE POLLUTION - Refers to excessive  noise in the environment that  may cause hearing  impairments, stress,  irritation, fatigue  and emotion.
  • LAND POLLUTION
    • Refers to the  exposed wastes on  land
    • it may also destroy  the ecosystem  in the  community once the  soil is contaminated
  • MINING: a procedure done to acquire  minerals from  land
  • ILLEGAL MINING
    • when there is no permit secured  from government authorities
    • The equipment and procedures that    will damage the environment and   people.
  • DEFORESTATION - clearing of plants  and trees in the forests. It is done for  mining purposes,  commercial purposes,  and to produce wood  materials.
  • SOIL EROSION - The transfer of  soil from one place  to another and it is  caused by strong  winds, water and transferred to  another place by  humans.
  • NATURE'S PROBLEMS
    1. POLLUTION
    2. ILLEGAL MINING
    3. DEFORESTATION
    4. SOIL EROSION
    5. CYANIDE POISONING
    6. CORAL REEF DEGRADATION
    7. OIL SPILL
    8. PESTICIDE DRIFT
    9. FLASH FLOOD
    10. GLOBAL WARMING
  • TYPES OF POLLUTION
    1. AIR POLLUTION
    2. WATER POLLUTION
    3. LAND POLLUTION
    4. NOISE POLLUTION
  • CYANIDE POISONING - Divers pour poison on  the reef, which stuns the fish, kills the coral  polyps, and destroys  the coral. It then leaves  the marine creatures or  organisms homeless.
  • CORAL REEF DEGRADATION - Refers to the  gradual destruction of  coral reefs  caused by natural  man or man  made events.
  • OIL SPILL - A technological hazard  involving the release of  crude oil or constituents into  the environment.
  • PESTICIDE DRIFT
    • Pesticide is a chemical  substance used on plants to  kill insects that feed on  them.
    • Pesticide is a toxic  substance and may cause  disease or death when  ingested by humans and  animals.
  • FLASH FLOOD - A rapid flooding  of low – lying  areas- washes  rivers, dry lakes and basins.
  • 2 TYPES OF GLOBAL WARMING
    1. GREENHOUSE  EFFECT:
    2. CLIMATE CHANGE
  • GREENHOUSE  EFFECT: The heat and light  from the sun enters  but it is prevented  from escaping  because of the  gases.
  • CLIMATE CHANGE: A long term change  in the statistical  distribution of  weather patterns over periods ranging  from decades to  millions of years.
  • CONTAMINANTS: Any substance or material that pollute,  poison and make something impure
  • FOSSIL FUELS: produced from burning dead plants  and animals
  • PARTICULATES: Small substances or minute particles  present in air.
