Lungs

    Cards (10)

    • How the lungs work
      1. Air enters through the nose/mouth
      2. Passes through the trachea
      3. Enters the bronchi
      4. Splits into bronchioles
      5. Ends at the alveoli
    • Blood flow through the alveoli
Allows oxygen to be absorbed and carbon dioxide to be expelled
    • You can calculate the breathing rate by counting the number of breaths taken in a given time period
    • Alveoli are adapted to maximise the efficiency of gas exchange
    • The lungs
The lungs are in the thorax
    • The thorax
      • The top part of your body
      • Separated from the lower part by the diaphragm
    • Lungs
      • Protected by rib cage
      • Surrounded by pleural membranes
    • Air breathed in

      1. Splits into 7 tubes
      2. Goes through trachea
      3. Called bronchi
      4. Each bronchus goes to each lung
      5. Bronchi split into smaller tubes called bronchioles
      6. Bronchioles end at alveoli
    • Alveoli
      Where gas exchange happens
    • Calculating breathing rate
Breaths per minute = number of breaths / number of minutes
