Balance Scenario

Subdecks (6)

Cards (44)

  • Balance scenario 6 has good reaching outside BOS treatment/progression
  • Newton’s 1st Law “Balance”
    • The ability of an object to maintain a static position is related:
    • to the position of the Centre of Gravity (CoG)
    • Area of the base of support (BOS)
    • If CoG within BOS = balance (equilibrium)
  • Centre of Gravity:
    • WANT TO ENSURE LINE OF GRAVITY IS NORMAL DURING TREATMENT
    • Line of gravity (LoG) is the vertical representation of CoG
    • Stability = LoG within BoS
    • CoG in the anatomical position = S2 but moves as we do!
  • Stability limits:
    • the area within the BoS within which a person can move their CoG & remain balanced
    • going past your limit can result in you reacting to change stability (e.g. step) or you fall
  • “Ideal” stacking of segments - Line of gravity (“balance point” of body):
    • Through mastoid process of ear
    • Through or just anterior to shoulder joint
    • Just posterior to hip joint/ through greater trochanter
    • Just anterior to the knee joint
    • Just anterior to ankle joint
  • Line of gravity - anterior view:
    • midline of nose
    • midline of sternum
    • umbilicus
    • symphysis pubis
  • (FOCUS ON THESE FACTORS DURING TREATMENT) Postural Control - Complex & dynamic interaction of multiple systems:
    • Cognitive systems e.g.
    • Attention
    • Self confidence
    • Memory
    • Anxiety
  • cue for reaching inside and outside bos:
    • imagine sitting in assembly during primary school, tapping leg of person next to you is inside bos, tapping person on other side of person sitting next to you is outside bos of support
