Cardiovascular System

Cards (27)

  • The Cardiovascular System
    • Made up of 3 elements:
    • The heart: a muscular pump that pushes blood through the body
    • The blood vessels: a network of tubes that blood flows through
    • The blood: which circulates through the vessels
  • The heart
A pump: a mechanical device that moves fluid from one place to another by mechanical action
  • The heart
    • Has high pressure output lines (tubes) and low-pressure input (return) lines
    • We call these lines (tubes) vessels
  • Types of blood vessels
    • Arteries: Carry blood away from heart (high pressure)
    • Capillaries: Thin tubes where material exchanges between blood and cell
    • Veins: Transports blood back to heart (low pressure)
  • Arteries
    • Must be able to expand because the heart pressurizes the blood in burst
    • Each burst is called a pulse
    • To check your pulse you must find an artery
  • Most of the exchange between tissue and blood cells occurs in the capillaries
  • Circulatory system
    • Transports blood to every cell
  • Respiratory system

    • Transports oxygen to every cell
  • Digestive system

    • Breaks down food into nutrients that can be absorbed through the intestinal wall and into the blood
  • Other transportation systems exist
  • Circulatory system
Also called the vascular system, made up of 3 elements
