1. Interphase: The cell prepares for division by growing and replicating its DNA
2. Prophase: Chromatin condenses into chromosomes, and the nuclear membrane dissolves
3. Metaphase: Chromosomes line up along the center of the cell
4. Anaphase: Chromatids separate and move to opposite ends of the cell
5. Telophase: Chromatids reach the poles and new nuclear membranes form around them
6. Cytokinesis: The cell divides into two daughter cells, each with a complete set of chromosomes
