• 1895 by William G. Morgan, physical director of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA)
• The game was originally called "mintonette"
• Alfred Halsted proposed the name of "VOLLEYBALL"
• SERVING - first contact in a volleyball game
• ATTACKING - also known as hitting, is the final step in the pass-set-spike sequence and is used to score points
• PASSING - also known as the bump, used to recieved the ball from the defender.
• SETTING - also known as setting up or preparing, is the act of passing the ball over the net with an open hand palm facing downwards
• BLOCKING - also known as blocking out, is the defensive technique that involves jumping into the air to prevent the opposing team from scoring a point
• only 6 players on the floor at any given time. 3 in the front row and 3 in the back row
• players may not hit the ball twice in succession (a block is not considered a hit)
• a ball is out if it hits an antenna
• it is legal to contact the ball with any part of a player's body
• volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are seperated by a net
