EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

Cards (14)

  • Research
A systematic, objective and comprehensive investigation of certain phenomenon which involves accurate gathering and recording, and critical analyses and interpretation of all facts about the phenomenon for theoretical or practical ends
  • Experimental research
A study conducted with a scientific approach using two sets of variables, where the first set acts as a constant to measure the differences of the second set
  • Experimental research
    • Time is a vital factor in establishing a relationship between cause and effect
    • Invariable behavior between cause and effect
    • You wish to understand the importance of cause and effect
  • Basic research
Focuses on the advancement and production of new knowledge, used by academicians and scientists
  • Characteristics of basic research
    • Its goals to refute or support theories that explain how the social world works, what causes things to occur, why society changes, and why social relations operate in that manner
    • Lacks practical application
    • Provides a foundation for the advancement of knowledge in various fields of study and policy areas
    • Provides explanations and is a source of methods, theories, frameworks, and concepts to understand the causes of how people act and think
    • Is bounded by scientific method and requires the highest degree of academic scholarship
    • The research problems and topics are varied diverse
    • The results are usually published in scholarly journals, books and other academic publications or presented in academic conferences
  • Applied research
Focuses on addressing a specific concern or usually offers a solution to a social problem, usually done by practitioners in the business sector, government, health care sector, social service organizations, political organizations and educational institutions
  • Characteristics of applied research
    • Research conducted is part of the job
    • Research problems are very specific according to the demands of the superiors
    • Rigors and standards of scholarship depend on the use of the research results
    • The goal of research is to provide generalizations to areas of interests of the sponsors
    • Success is determined when the sponsors used the research results in decision-making
    • Applied research results are not publicly disseminated or published in journals and are usually made available to only a few decision-makers, practitioners, or research sponsors
  • Purposes of research
    • Exploration
    • Description
    • Explanation
  • Exploratory research

To satisfy the researcher's curiosity and desire for better understanding, to examine the viability of undertaking a more extensive study, and to develop the methods to be used in future studies
  • Descriptive research
Provides a detailed and accurate picture of the situation, clarifies a sequence of steps or stages, documents a causal process or mechanism, and reports on the background or context of a situation
  • Explanatory research
Tests a theory's predictions or principles, elaborates and expands a theory's explanation, extends or develops a theory to new issues or topics, supports or contradicts an explanation, connects issues or topics with a general principle or theory, and determines which of the explanations is considered the best answer
  • Steps in the research process
    • Selection of a topic
    • Identify the research question
    • Develop a research design
    • Data gathering/collection
    • Data analysis
    • Interpretation of data
    • Communicate research findings and results
  • Science Investigatory Project (SIP)

Uses the scientific method to study and test an idea about how something works, involving researching a topic, formulating a working theory (or hypothesis) that can be tested, conducting the experiment, and recording and reporting the results
  • Rules for crafting a title for SIP research
    • Accuracy
    • Clarity
    • Relevance
    • Conciseness
    • Specificity
    • Avoid abbreviations
    • Grammar and formatting
    • Originality
