  • According to Fleming (2018), a position paper is one where an author chooses a side on a particular topic and build up a case for your opinion or position
  • Why are position papers written? Position papers are written for the purpose of generating support regarding a particular stand/idea (Xavier.edu 2020)
  • The fundamental goal of a position paper is not only to present your stand on an issue/idea but also to determine how your stance is related to the argument of others (CSU, 2020)
  • How Position paper is different from other Writing?
    • It provides a stand in a certain or one idea, therefore you should have credible sources to provide to your readers
    • It is more challenging because you are persuading
    • Its purpose is to convince your audience to take our position to be presented

    INTRODUCTION
    • start with an introduction which presents the issue while grabbing the attention of readers
    • give a short summary about the issue
    • define the issues and discuss its background
    • provide a general statement of your position via your argumentative thesis statement
  • Issue + stand + claim = argumentative thesis

    BODY
    • state your main arguments
    • provide sufficient evidence for each argument such as statistical data, interview with experts, and testimonies
    • provide counter arguments against the possible weaknesses of your arguments

    • restate your position and main arguments
    • suggest a course of action
    • state what makes a position superior and more acceptable
    • end with a powerful closing statement such as quotation, a challenge, or a question
  • Position paper shows a debatable opinion about an issue. It contains 4 to 6 paragraphs about an opinion which is plausible on a particular topic. It helps you to give an explanation about your viewpoint on an issue and discuss your solutions about it
