    needs a sense of social solidarity. Where individual members must feel like they belong to a community eg uniform and history
  • Specialist skills
    • School is something of a ’society in miniature’ preparing us for wider society. Modern industrial ecomonies have a complex division of labour. where the production of a single item usually involves the cooperation of many different specialists. This cooperation promotes social solidarity but for it to be successful each person involved must have the necessary specialist skills. Education teaches the knowledge and skills needed for individuals
  • Parsons
    Meritocracy- everyone has the same opportunities and we can all get the same rewards If we put in effort. Eg in school, good grades, certificates
    School as a bridge - sees school as a ‘focal socialisation agency’ which acts as a bridge between the family and wider society
    Particularistic standards- within the family, children are judged by these standards. rules that apply only to that child, set by parents.
    Universalistic standards- school children are judged by these. rules apply to all, eg be kind, the law
