  • HIV - Human Immunodeficiency virus
    The one which causes AIDS
  • HIV
    Infects human cells and uses the nutrients and the energy provided by the cells to reproduce and grow
  • AIDS - Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
    Disease leading to the breakdown of the body's immune system which causes the body to fail in fighting off infections
  • HIV can lead to infections that attack and destroy CD4 (T cells) of the immune system
  • AIDS can be diagnosed by the number of CD4 cell count
  • A healthy individual has around 500-1,600 cells/ cubic mm
  • Less than 200 cells/cubic mm indicates AIDS
  • Main Causes of HIV/AIDS
    • Sexual Transmission - intimate sexual activities like vaginal, oral, anal sex with a partner
    • Transmission through pregnancy - pregnant woman infecting the fetus during pregnancy or breastfeeding
    • Transmission through blood - sharing or syringes and needles
  • Body Fluids
    • Blood
    • Semen
    • Pre-seminal fluid
    • Breast milk
    • Vaginal fluids
    • Rectal (anal) mucous
  • HIV lives and reproduces in these fluids
  • Urine, sweat, tears, saliva, feces, nasal fluids, or vomits have low levels of HIV unless mixed with blood
  • How To Know if one is infected with HIV?
    • Blood has HIV antibodies, after blood sample test
    • Temporary mild flu-like symptoms immediately after infection and persistent swollen glands
    • Depression, feeling blue and lonely and or feeling down for a couple of weeks
    • HIV-related Diarrhea
    • Thrush, white coating in the mouth with bad taste that cannot be removed with brushing (most common)
    • Weight loss
    • Sinus infection, relentless pounding in the head and face
    • Fatigue, feelings of tiredness and exhaustion
  • There is no cure for HIV/AIDS
  • ART Therapy
    Combination of medication that are used to prevent HIV from replicating to protect the body against the virus and infection
  • ART Therapy helps those with HIV positive to live longer and happier and lower the risk of advancing the condition into AIDs
  • ABC of HIV Prevention

    • Abstinence or delaying sex
    • Being safe by being faithful to only one partner
    • Correct use of condoms although it is not 100% safe
  • 25 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE DIED WORLDWIDE
