  • Safety:
    Personal Protective Equipment
    • You should have a safe place with easy access to store your personal protective equipment so that you can wear it every day. PPE will protect you against health and safety risks when you complete dangerous tasks.
    The equip should be:
    1. Used properly
    2. Replaced when needed to
  • Clothing in the workplace or on site
    • Button shirt sleeves to avoid loose, hanging sleeves
    • Tie shoelaces so you don't trip
    • Wear overalls + don't wear clothing that will make you feel too hot or too cold
  • Protective headgear
    • A hard hat is compulsory on any building site
  • Ear and Eye protection
    • When noise levels are high wear ear muffs
    • Wear safety googles when working on machinery
  • Protective Footgear
    • Always wear non-slip sturdy boots
  • Hand and skin protection
    • To protect your hands and skin, use gloves/ apply skin creams to provide barrier between the hazardous substance and the skin
  • Hand tools
    • Always keep tools in good condition
    • Use specially insulated tools for electrical work
    • Carry tools with their sharp edges facing downwards
  • Power Tools
    • Only use a power tool if you know how to operate it
    • Never touch or attempt to adjust moving parts
    • A power tool should only be used by one person at a time
  • Small plant equipment
    • Beware of loose wire
    • Conduct pre-operational checks
    • Monitor equipment and repair faults
  • Construction methods in the workplace
    • Fire hoses must be in perfect condition
    • Facilities for rest and eating must be available
    • Drinking water must be readily available
  • Health and safety aspects associated with storage of materials
    A construction site can be a very dangerous area, so its important to ensure that the site is safe by managing it well and managing control. Every contractor is responsible for the safety of his workers.
  • Safe practices on site
    • Stored in stable stacks that will not tumble
    • Tools and material must be clearly marked when they are stored
  • Storing material on site
    1. Material should be stored under cover
    2. Control cards must be completed for any material that is used
    3. Sand and stone should be covered with plastic
  • Safe stacking of material in the workshop
    • Stocks should be linked and/or interlinked
    • Material should only be stacked on strong, firm flooring
    • No stock of material should be higher than three times its width
  • Storing hazardous material in the workplace
    • The room must be well ventilated
    • The door must have a threshold in case of a spill
    • Containers must always be sealed or properly closed
  • Flammable liquids
    • Sufficient precautionary measures must be taken
    • Flammable liquids must be secured using non-flammable material
    • The building or fume cupboard must be constructed using fireproof material
  • Flammable liquids and gases
    • The storage area should be locked and well ventilated
    • A NO SMOKING sign must be posted near the storage area
    • Always lock containers
    • Cordon off the area if necessary
