  • FITNESS- state or condition of being physically sound and healthy, especially as the result of exercises and proper nutrition.
  • Fitness can also be defined as skill related fitness and health related fitness
  • Health related fitness- Are those that are designed as improving health, wellness, and one’s quality of life.
  • Health-related fitness components: •Cardiorespiratory endurance• Muscular strength• Muscular endurance• Flexibility• Body composition
  • Skill related fitness- Essential to athletic performance and the ability to perform activities of daily living.
  • Skill-related fitness components: Speed , Agility, Balance, Coordination, reaction time, Power
  • Speed- This is how long it takes for an individual or an object to travel a certain distance
  • Speed = Distance/Time
  • 3 Main Types of SPEED- Accelerative ,Pure, Speed eEndurance
  • •Accelerative Speed – the speed with which you start moving faster, which is seen in sprints of up to 30 meters.
  • •Pure Speedyour maximum speed, which is seen in sprints of up to 60 meters.
  • •Speed Endurance – being able to maintain your maximum speed or near your maximum speed for a period of time, which is seen during sprints with short recovery periods in between.
  • Agility- Is the ability of a sports player to move and change direction quickly, precisely without a significant loss of speed, balance, or body control
  • Agility is critical in any sport that requires rapid changes in direction, deceleration, and acceleration.
  • Agility has both movement and reactive elements
  • Speed and Agility Drills- Figure 8 run, 3 cone shuffle, nfl combine drill, 2 dot jumps
  • Power- Is the ability to move the body parts swiftly while applying the maximum force of the muscles.
  • Power- It refers to a person’s ability to transfer energy into force at a rapid pace also known as explosive body movement.
  • •Examples of power: •Doing the shot put in track and field•Jumping vertically to hit a volleyball•Throwing a baseball at a high speed
  • •Exercises to improve power: Kettlebell Swings, Jump squats, weight training
  • Reaction Time- Relates to the time between one of your senses recognizing a stimulus and your body moving in response.
  • •Examples of reaction time:•Catching a ball when someone throws it to you suddenly•Swerving out of the way when something suddenly appears in your path•Sprinting as soon as you hear the start pistol in a race
  • Exercise to improve reaction time - Goal keeping , Ball drop , Video games
  • Balance-refers to your ability to adjust your body position to remain upright
  • Power is a combination of both speed and muscular strength.
  • Coordination- Refers to a person’s ability to perform complex movements due to the working together of the nervous system and the muscles of the body
  • •Examples of coordination:•Catching a frisbee while running•Dribbling a ball while moving•Jumping and hitting a ball
  • Exercises to improve coordination:
    Playing catch, jump rope, juggling
  • Balance example- yoga, single leg balance,lunges
  • •Examples of balance:•Being able to walk in a straight line without veering to the side•Standing up from sitting in a chair without using your hands for support•Landing on both feet after jumping.
  • Balance- Refers to a person’s ability to maintain equilibrium when moving or when they are in a stationary position
