  • Reasons for red scare : the cold war

    - fear of communism, USA was a capitalist democracy. The revolution of 1917, the Russian empire wase taken over my communists, wave of anti - communism spread. Terrified they would make USA communist.
    -Beginning of the cold war, last month of WWII, eastern Europe had been liberated from the Nazis by soviet union, they remained in these countries. Saw this as the SU trying to take over Europe, increased red scare.
    - Atomic bombs, 16th July 1945, USA tested atomic bomb, SU hadn't been told - saw this as threat. 9th August, Stalin boosted the soviet atomic research, U.S very scared - biggest threat now had weapon of mass destruction.

    The blockade was a Soviet attempt to starve out the allies in Berlin in order to gain control. They cut off all road, rail and waterway access to West Berlin, isolating the city. The United States responded by airlifting food and supplies into Berlin increasing tension.
