• lives in a 'little shed' that 'leaned off the wall of the barn' - Crooks relies on the animals in the shed for his living
• Crooks face 'lighted with pleasure' when verbally abusing lennie
• 'books ain't no good. A guy needs somebody to be near him'
• 'a guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody'
• 'i ain't wanted in the bunkhouse'
• he keeps medicine bottles over his bunk 'both for himself and for the horses'
