    • Certain subgenres will provide the player with obstacles to try and make achieving those goals more difficult
  • Creative games

    • Games where there is a world for players to manipulate without consequence
    • Players are also free to invent custom game modes and maps to share with others
    • Generally do not have stories and plots, instead of focusing on features for the players to experiment with
  • Survival games

    • Refers to games where the player spawns in a random location in the world with minimal resources
    • From here, they must survive as long as possible while overcoming obstacles such as enemies or death by natural means
    • Players are usually left with no instructions and form goals of their own
  • Simulations
    • A subgenre that revolves around simulating or mimicking aspects of the real world like hunting, driving, or cooking
    • Some simulations even allow players to control one or more characters and control facets of their lives
