Between a rock and hard place

• The title foreshadows the intense situation that will happen but also is quite an idiomatic title
• it starts with tension in the first paragraph with a short declarative sentence
• there is repeated use of technical language throughout such as “bowl” “lip”
• The writer uses descriptive imagery which allows the reader to imagine the narrow gap he is faced with in line 11 “ shoulder width crevice”
• The use of long sentences in the second paragraph suggests keeping himself safe is complicated
• in line 21 the word “ traverse” shows he uses skills to stay safe
