  • Infectious Disease - any disease caused by the direct effect of a pathogen
  • Communicable Disease - capable of being spread from person to person through either direct or indirect mechanisms
  • Contagious Disease - easily spread from person to person
  • Iatrogenic Disease - contracted as the result of a medical procedure
  • Nosocomial Disease - acquired in hospital settings
  • Zoonotic Disease - transmitted from animals to humans
  • Noncommunicable Disease - infectious disease not spread from one person to another
  • Noninfectious Disease - diseases not caused by pathogens
  • Acute Disease - pathologic changes occur over a relatively short time and involve a rapid onset of disease conditions
