water cycle

Cards (22)

  • Baseflow
Water flowing out from groundwater storage into a river or stream.
  • Channel Storage

Water flowing in a river or stream channel.
  • Evaporation
Water flowing in a river or stream channel.
Evaporation: Water being returned to the atmosphere by changing state from a
liquid to a vapour. Caused by heating of surface water, such as lakes and the
    ocean.
  • Evapotranspiration
The combined processes of evaporation and transpiration.
  • Groundwater storage
Water stored within rocks underground. The rocks are saturated with water in this area. The top of this saturated zone of groundwater
is known as the water table.
  • Infiltration
Water soaking into the ground through the soil surface.
  • Interception
Precipitation is caught and stored on the surface of vegetation,
    especially leaves.
  • Stem Flow

Precipitation that has been intercepted by vegetation, then passes down the branches, stems and drips off the leaves to the ground.
  • Overland flow/surface runoff

Water flowing as a sheet or little rivulets over
    the ground surface.
  • Percolation
Water moving downwards from the soil into the rocks beneath.
  • Permeability
How connected the pores are within rock or soils, a higher permeability allows water to move through the rock or soil easier.
  • Plant uptake
Water being taken up from the soil into vegetation via roots.
  • Porous
The ability to hold water in pores
  • Precipitation
Water falling from the sky and deposited on Earth's surface in various forms e.g., rain, snow, sleet and hail.
  • recharge
Refilling of a zone of saturation following a period of draw down
  • Soil water
Water held by the soil either on or between soil particles
  • Springs
Natural discharge point of water at the surface of the ground from beneath the surface.
  • Surface water

Water stored on the ground surface in pools, puddles, ponds and lakes.
  • Throughflow
Water flowing down slope through the soil, almost parallel to the surtace.
  • Transpiration
Water vapour returned to the atmosphere by plants through stomata in their leaves.
  • Vegetation water
Water stored within the tissues of plants.
  • Water table

The layer separating saturated bedrock below from unsaturated bedrock below. The water table follows the shape of the topography goes up and down due to the inputs and outputs of the hydrological cycle.
