Hareton and Cathy Analysis

    Cards (8)

    • Hareton - mirrors Heathcliff
      • Had the same upbringing - nice to begin with, but treated as a servant once people die
"[Hareton] lives in his own house as a servant" - Nelly
      • When Nelly leaves WH to go to TG, Hareton turns from a polite young man to a little savage, much like younger Catherine and Heathcliff
    • Hareton - abuse
      • Heathcliff intends, and even tells us that he will turn Hareton into his servant
"Now my bonny lad, you are mine!"
      • But ultimately, Hareton doesn't grow as crooked as Heathcliff - he marries Cathy and at the end of the novel, is on the verge of having a very nice life - he's able to break the cycle of revenge, not become bitter, and have a happy ending
    • Hareton - happy ending?
Heathcliff is capable of showing love and affections, and fails to do to Hareton what's been done to him
"Mr Heathcliff, I believe, has not treated him physically ill" - Nelly
      • Heathcliff himself says that he struggles to hate Hareton the same way Hindley hated himself
"I'd have loved the lad has he been someone else" - Heathcliff
      • Hareton's reaction to Heathcliff's death indicates some level of care and affected between the two
"[Hareton] sat by the corpse all night, weeping in witter earnest"
      • Hareton sees Heathcliff as somewhat of a father figure to him
    • Hareton - connection with Catherine
Heathcliff sees Catherine in Hareton more than in Cathy:
      • In the world of Wuthering Heights, biology doesn't really matter, people's spirits matter more - Hareton reminds H of C because he has the same rugged roughness that C had when she was a child
      • Cathy, however, is the product of TG, and so H sees her just as Edgar as civilisation - the things that Heathcliff and what he represents is against.
      • In a way, Hareton is almost like a replacement of C for H - unlike C, Hareton stays with H at WH
      • Hareton is what H and C could have been
    • Cathy - comparison to her mother
      Doesn't resemble C much
"That capacity for intense attachment reminded me of her mother: still she did not resemble her; for she could be soft and mild as a dove" - Nelly
      • Cathy is more a product of the civilised world of TG
      • She's also unlike C in the way in which she was her fathers favourite - which accounts for her softness that her mother didn't have.
    • Cathy - sheltered upbringing

"till she reached the age of thirteen, she has not once been beyond the range of the park herself"
      • Edgar tries to remove the connection of her mother's upbringing, therefore she's naive at times - she mirrors the development of I and E.
      • Cathy enters the world of WH and has to try and survive
      • But unlike I, who runs from the world of WH, and E who simply presents that it doesn't exist, Cathy is able to confront it.
    • Naivety
Cathy is unable to see the dark side of Linton
      • She is manipulated by Heathcliff and marries him
      • This marriage ultimately breaks down her naivety
    • Cathy - deception from appearance
Cathy's deception from appearance is an improvement from her father
      • He was initially deceived by Hareton's rough appearance, thinking that he is the same as Heathcliff
      • She eventually sees under his appearance
      • Cathy is an example of civilisation embracing nature
      • Cathy is also an example of what Edgar and Isabella could've been, had they been more compassionate and understanding.
