Cards (36)

  • Network
A collection of objects connected to each other in some way
  • Network
    • Made up of vertices joined by edges
  • Vertex
A point or dot in which lines of a network diagram branch off or intersect
  • Edge
The lines that join the vertices in the network can also be called 'allies'
  • Degree
Number of edges attached to a vertex. The degree can be odd or even.
  • Loop
An edge that is attached twice to a vertex. It counts as two degrees but only 1 edge
  • Walk
Movement along the edges of a network from one vertex to the next
  • Connected network
You can walk between any pair of vertices
  • Disconnected network
There is a pair of vertices between which you cannot walk
  • Path
When all the edges/vertices in the walk are DIFFERENT (no repeats)
  • Open path
A path that starts and finishes at the same vertex
  • Closed path

A path that starts and finishes at the same vertex/also called a cycle
  • Weighted edges
Numbers on the edges represent real-world quantities such as time and distance
  • Directed network
Networks where the edges have an arrow indicating the direction
  • Tree
A connected graph where any two vertices are connected by one edge (no loop or closed path cycle)
  • Spanning tree

A tree that counts ALL vertices of a given network (may not contain all the edges)
  • Minimum spanning tree
A spanning tree with the smallest total edge weight
  • Critical path analysis
Technique that identifies the activities required to complete a project or task and the time required for each
  • Activity chart
A list of activities that includes a list of predecessor activities and how long each activity will take
  • Dummy activity

Required if two activities share some, but not all their predecessors. Shown on a network using a dotted line
  • Earliest starting time (EST)

The earliest start time an individual activity can have
  • Latest starting time (LST)

The latest time an activity can start after the commencement of the project and still be completed in the minimum time
  • Critical path
The path consisting of all critical activities that cannot be delayed or prolonged without delaying the whole project
  • Network flow diagram
A directed network graph where something flows from one point (source) to another (sink)
  • Maximum flow = minimum cut
  • Unknown Speaker: '"the dark water - black and cold and roaring"'
  • The ocean is utilized as a metaphorical representation of their father's cruelty and his threat is established in the prologue
  • Polysyndeton
    • Introduces the significance of the sea
    • Foreshadows the novel and the boy's experiences with it
  • Dad and the water
Become tandem sinister forces that ultimately claim Harry's life
  • Unknown Speaker: '"Miles let the rip that ran with the bluff carry him. He felt his body floating free."'
  • Water reflects Miles' inner strength as despite the ocean claiming his brother, he is able to find freedom within it
  • Despite his harrowing experience with the ocean, he doesn't let it hold him back
  • Alliteration and imagery
    • Demonstrates the healing and calming facet of the ocean
    • A side not experienced by their Father
  • The ocean is not only a representation of the volatility in the Curren’s household, but is also a depiction of the complexities of human life
  • It allows the audience to question and reflect on the reasons for an erratic life
  • The ocean is as tumultuous as life itself
