    safeguarding means protecting children and vulnerable adults from abuse and maltreatment
  • Need for safeguarding:
    • some individuals more at risk of abuse , maltreatment or neglect than others
  • Individuals who need safeguarding:
    • have learning disability
    • have a physical disability
    • have sensory impairment
    • Lack mental capacity

  • safeguarding necessary for:
    • protecting children from maltreatment
    • preventing impairment of health and development
    • ensuring children grown up In circumstances that include safe and effective care
    • enabling children to have best outcomes through taking actions
  • DBS service
    helps protect vulnerable people from abuse and harm by preventing unsuitable people from working with vulnerable adults and children
    • criminal record checks - barred lost information
    • decide if appropriate for person to be on or removed from barred list
  • barred list —> list of individuals held by DBS who are unsuitable for working with children / vulnerable adults
  • DBS checks:
    • employers in HSC and childcare requires DBS checks for staff and volunteers in their organisation
    • checks required for anyone waiting to foster / adopt a child
    • DBS applicants must be 16+
  • steps of the DBS process:
    1. employee gets applicants form from DBS
    2. employee fills in applicant form and returns it with documents to prove identity
    3. employee gives completed form to DBS or registered organisation
    4. DBS send certified to applicant - employees must request to see it
    5. employer can check status of DBS online
    • DBS checks don’t have an expiry date
    • will need to be carried for every new job role
  • 4 different types of DBS
    1. basic — unspent convictions and conditional cautions checked - any employment
    2. standard - checks for convictions cautions and final warnings ( bus drivers )
    3. enhanced — standard but additional info from local police relevant - for anyone working with vulnerable people
    4. enhanced with checklist - checks the DBS barred list

    • DBS have to be carried out on all new staff
    • Staff have legal duties to safeguard children and vulnerable adults
    • legislations made safeguarding everyones responsibility
    • organisations have to work together to make sure vulnerable people protected
