Rhinovirus

• Infects the upper nasal epithelial cells
• Has watery discharge
• Produces bradykinin and IL release
• The inflammation response is the reason for most of the symptoms
• They are transmitted through aerosol
• Nasal congestion and watery discharge, sore throat
• Incubation is 12-72 hours
• Transmission is aerosol and person to person contact
• Usually undiagnosed, it is self limiting
• Rhinovirus is a naked ssRNA positive sense virus
• There are over rhinovirus types
• The rhinovirus binds to the ICAM-1 epithelial cells
• Rhinovirus enters by endocytosis
• The flu has a 12-72 hour incubation period
