Paint

Cards (39)

  • Paint - any liquid, liquifiable, or mastic composition that is converted to an opaque solid film.
  • Protect - retard corrosion of metal
  • Decoration - add festive trim to a room
  • Functionality - modify light reflection or heat radiation. Also used to identify hazards.
  • Faux painting or faux finishing - decorative painting techniques to replicate materials and other decorative finishes.
    [French - faux = fake]
  • Pigment
Solids that contribute to color (pigments are insoluble in vehicle = suspension; dye is a liquid or is soluble in vehicle = solution)
  • Binder or resin
Film forming component of paint, must always be present. Can be categorized according to drying or mechanism.
  • Drying
    Evaporation of vehicle
  • Curing
    Polymerization of binder
  • Volatile vehicle/solvent
Adjusts and affects the viscosity, application, and stability of the paint. Volatile and is not part of the paint film. Main function is to carry the non volatile components
  • Volatile vehicle/solvent
    • Water - water-based paints
    • Cheap paints = higher percentage of solvents per volume
  • Concrete painting
    • Plaster - pasty composition that hardens on drying and is used for coating walls, ceilings, and partitions.
    • Neutralizer - liquid solution applied on plastered concrete wall before application of the first coating to prevent moisture content.
    • Patching compound - powder type substance mixed with paint to smoothen its surface.
  • Primer - preparatory coating on materials before painting. Better adhesion, increases paint durability and provides additional protection.
  • SEALERS/VARNISH
Lacquer - clear or colored coating that dries by solvent evaporation and curing process that produces a hard durable finish.
[Portuguese - lac = resin excreted from insects]
  • Lacquer thinner - mixed with varnish to enhance viscosity
  • Lacquers using acrylic resin was developed in 1950s. Advantage of acrylic lacquers = fast drying time
  • Polyurethane - varnish, typically hard, abrasion-resistant, and durable coatings. Popular for hardwood floors, but unsuitable for finishing furniture/detailed pieces.
  • Spar varnish - marine varnish; high quality, waterproof, and sunlight-resistant for ship or boat spars and other woodworks. Modified tung oil and phenolic resins are often used.
  • Shellac - commercial resin in amber flakes made from lac.
  • WOOD PAINTING
Wood stain - type of paint that is very thin and low in viscosity. Penetrates the surface rather than a film on top of the surface. Stain is predominantly pigment or dye.
  • PAINTS BASE ON BINDER/SOLVENT
Enamel-based paints (Alkyd) - dries to an especially hard usually glossy, finish. Contains either glass powder or tiny metal flake fragments instead of pigments. Also mixed with varnish to increase shine and hardening process.
  • PAINTS BASE ON BINDER/SOLVENT
QDE (Quick Drying Enamel) - alkyd type paint that provides great durability = fast drying paint. Formulated to give a tough, durable, beautiful and high build film on wood and metal.
  • PAINTS BASE ON BINDER/SOLVENT
Flat Wall Enamel #800 - flat alkyd type paint that provide great durability = fast drying paint. Levels evenly, no lap and brush marks.
  • PAINTS BASE ON BINDER/SOLVENT
Tinting color - solution mixed with enamel paint to produce color (TRU-TONE)
  • PAINTS BASE ON BINDER/SOLVENT
Acrylic water-based paint (LATEX) - water-based sub-micrometre polymer particles. Curing by coalescence where the water, solvent, and binder are fused together. Water emulsion of synthetic rubber/plastic obtained by polymerization.
    1. Flat latex
    2. Semi-gloss latex
    3. Gloss latex
  • Water - used as a thinning agent to latex paints.
  • Acri-color - liquid solution mixed with masonry paint to produce color.
