Enzymes

Cards (4)

  • Enzyme activity is affected by pH and temperature. If both factors increase over the enzyme's optimum condition, the enzyme activity will decrease and denature.
  • Enzymes are made up of biological catalysts - substances that increase the rate of chemical reactions without being used up. The shape of the active site is specific for each substrate (substance the enzyme acts on)
  • The active site has an optimal shape to fit with its corresponding substrate
  • When the substrate fits into the active site it forms an enzyme - substrate complex which then breaks down into products
