public opinion (NW)

  • Did it have any impact?
    Newspapers did appear but their number fell from 79 to just 4 in 1811 (pro-government). There was also the ‘Bulletins de la Grande
    Armee’ which kept public informed about what was happening, though extremely one-sided and glorified leader and army. The public began to have an increased role in the war effort (Levee en masse, 1 million citizen). However, armies continued to pillage villages– this would’ve turned public opinion against the war (ultimately shows that although state wanted the public to support the war, public opinion did not affect military decisions)
