  • What did Napoleon benefit from?
    Napoleon certainly benefitted from many of the organisational developments that occurred during the French Revolutionary Wars, such as the idea of the corps system. He did, however, make his own adaptations and developments which affected the nature of warfare
  • How did Napoleon arrange his forces?
    Napoleon arranged his forces into flexible battalions operating across roughly a 120-mile front, this proved to be key in some of the French victories eg Ulm in 1805 when the French army battalions assembled to encircle the cumbersome and immobile Austrian forces which forced General Mack to surrender his forces unconditionally leading to French victory
  • How was the manoeuvre of armies commanded?
    The corps commander would follow standard procedure
    during maneuver of the unit. Napoleon allowed trusted corps commanders full flexibility in deciding their marching technique and battle formations. One engaged the corps commander would oversee his fight with the enemy
