quality of soldiers (FRW)

Cards (4)

  • How did it affect nature?

In some campaigns the forces that the French could generate were far greater than their enemies, in turn this meant they were more capable of replacing their losses thanks to levee en masse
  • How did they change the nature?
High morale= an acceptance of higher casualty rates (20%). Tactics had to change, eg frontal assaults using weight of numbers to overcome enemy, due to hasty recruitment which couldn't cram the intensive years of training in drill and musket technique into basic training
  • Features of QS in the FRW?

Training was a 2 month programme. Quantity was better than quality eg Jemappes (outnumbered 3:1) and Valmy 1792 the inexperienced French soldiers overwhelmed and defeated a smaller number of professional Austrians (used like a battering ram against enemies with mixed lines and dense columns)
  • How was Lazare Carnot's generalship affected by quantity of soldier?

He changed the tactical approach of the French and began to use their numerical advantage by adopting shock tactics where soldiers were used as battering rams to overwhelm their enemies as seen in the victory of Valmy in 1792. In 1793 their numerical advantage meant they could fight 2-3 battles a week
