industrialisation & technology (WW1)

Cards (5)

  • How many tanks did Germany produce?
    20
  • Advantages in industry?
Balanced at the start of the war. German steel production increased rapidly from 3.16m tons in 1890 to 13.15m tons by 1910. This provided the materials needed for armaments. There was mass production of machine guns/large artillery weapons/millions of shells. As the war progressed Allies gained the advantage.
  • Advances in technology?
Machine gun, large artillery weapons. Whilst Britain and France developed 5000 tanks by end and Germany had built only 17-20- but otherwise mostly similar. Germans could be argued to have had an advantage with gas at first
  • Impact on nature?
Bombardments only happen due to industry, allowed for a war of attrition. German industry ensured WW1 was the first modern war. Industrialisation endured a destructive war. It changed the nature of battlefield warfare by giving the advantage to the defender with machine guns do soldiers could hold territory. Large armies supplied with weapons. Bombardment of enemy troops took place miles behind frontline because of large artillery and shells.
  • Impact on outcome?
Machine guns ensured large scale of casualties. Industrial production made war longer and more costly. Technology didn’t have a big impact. Industry did as it allowed us to sustain the fight longer. Germany surrender as allies overpower them to meet demands
