    Contracts and produces acids and enzymes that break down food into chyme. This increases the surface area for digestion

    Absorption of water, nutrients (via villi), electrolytes.
  • Function of Large Intestine

    Remaining water is absorbed, leaving only faeces.
  • Function Of Rectum
    Faeces are stored, then eventually comes out.
  • Villi: Projections from the surface, typically serving to increase surface area and facilitate the passage of fluid or nutrients
