  1. Dominant hand on patient

  2. Middle finger in intercostal space

  3. Tap with non-dominant hand middle finger
• Percussion

  • Can only identify problems up to 5cm deep
  • Deeper lesions or pathology's will not be detected
  • Small (less than 5cm) lesions or pathology areas will not be detected
• Percussion

  Confirms auscultation
• Percussion sounds

  • Normal= resonant
  • Hyper-resonant= excess air (hyperinflation)
  • Dull= increased density in lung like infection
  • Stony dull = underlying fluid
