quality of soldiers (ACW)

Cards (3)

  • How does Lee at Chancellorsville show generalship to be more important than size of army?

Lee was attacked by a far stronger army from the front and side to crush him by weight of numbers. He divided his forces into a larger and a smaller part, despite the risk in the face of larger numbers, then held off the front attack before turning the army to defeat the side attack. This was a bold and effective tactic where most generals would've retreated.
  • How did the quality in terms of loyalty to the cause and motivation to fight affect the nature?

It allowed for huge casualty figures and the size of the war was huge due to the many volunteers eg there was 1.5 million union soldiers and only 6% were conscripted, there were 750,000 confederate soldiers and only 12% were conscripted. The 1st Minnesota regiment sustained 82% casualties in the battle of Gettysburg but still stayed and won (massive impact on outcome).
  • How did the lack of quality in terms of loyalty to the cause and motivation to fight affect the nature and outcome?

Could be suggested that by the end of the war the confederates will to fight had diminished, desertion levels had increased, so they lost and had less means to sustain the war/battles?
