Cards (3)

  • Which military theorists advocated the use of highly armoured mechanised forces?
    Liddell-Hart
  • Liddel Hart in more detail?

In 1929 he suggested the concentration of mass forces was old fashioned and destructive. Manoeuvres, surprise and greater cooperation between different elements of armed forces was key. Mobile mechanised warfare was crucial and initial deep penetration by rapid movement using tanks, air power, mechanised vehicles and well motivated forces would avoid the need for mass attacks.
  • How did Liddell-Hart impact the nature of WW2?

He didn’t inspire Britain into spending huge sums to build up their mechanised forces. However, he inspired the German General Heinz Guderian who used large forces of highly mechanised units to swarm Poland in 1939 and France in 1940 in 2 highly successful Blitzkrieg assaults
