      1. Separating children into different ability groups of classes

      They tend to see them as lacking ability and have low expectations for them
    • Children tend to be placed in the lowest streams

    • Once people are streamed, it's usually difficult to move up to a highest stream
    • Children are locked into their teachers' low expectations of them
      This creates a self-fulfilling prophecy in which the children live up to the teachers' expectations by underachieving
    • Douglas found that children placed in lowest streams at aged eight had suffered declined in their IQ school by age 11
