  • What are three features of church architecture? (3)
    Nave: where the congregation gather
    Narthex: the entrance of Church
    Lady Chapel: dedicated to Mary
  • What is the importance of Church architecture? (4)
Nave means "boat" in Latin. Reminds the congregation that they are guided by God, who is like their captain.
Lady chapel reminds Catholics to honour Mary. She can intercede their prayers, and was an important person in Jesus' life, therefore is important.
  • Churches face East to remind Catholics that Jesus rose from the dead just like the sun rises from the East every morning
  • CCC: Jesus should be worshipped in church
  • Protestants don't have a Lady chapel because they don't place as much importance on Mary. This is because they believed she did not remain a virgin throughout her whole life, therefore was not free of sin. They also believe worshipping anyone but Jesus or God could be seen as idolatry.
  • Some Catholics believe having the whole congregation together in the Nave could be distracting to worship.

Reminds Catholics of Jesus resurrection and ascension into heaven. Helps them to focus on living a good life in order to get to heaven.
  • Why is the altar important? (2)
Its where the Priest blesses the host and wine, turning it into the body and blood of Christ- transubstantiation.

Hunger cloths show images from the Bible, depicting teachings and stories. These help illiterate Catholics and young children to understand the important events in Jesus life.
Hunger cloths should be used in developing countries where communities are struggling. They remind Catholics that God is by their side and will guide them through conflict.
