  • Your patient is NWB on their right leg following hip surgery, they also have problems with both wrists so it is painful. Teach them to walk for first time using GUTTER FRAME (starting with patient in bed)
    • REFER TO FIRST TIME UP SUBDECK
  • FRAME SAFETY CHECK
    • safety checks are similar to the crutches
    • ferrules must have good grip on it and are securely on the legs
    • wheels must be stable
    • the poppers must be visible and are stable
    • the poppers must be at the same level on each leg
    • the shafts must maintain their integrity - shouldnt be any dents, as it may collapse if someone puts their weight on it
    • there should be a sticker saying its been confirmed for safety (same as crutches)
    • the handles mustnt have any cracks
  • NWB - walk for first time using GUTTER FRAME (starting with patient in bed)
    • Same as Zimmer frame
    • make the safety checks with the frame first
    • bring frame forward, followed by the bad leg, then the good leg
    • (3 points of contact per gait cycle)
    • STAND RIGHT NEXT TO PTS
    • advantage of Gutter frame allows pts not to have to lift up frame, but only works on smoot surfaces
    • make sure to turn in half circles
    • try to get heel strike with injured leg
    • try to look forward, not down at feet

    • there should be around 90 degrees of elbow flexion, without there being too much lumbar flexion on the gutter frame
