  • In 1819, the original 13 states grew to 22; 11 free states and 11 slave states
  • In 1819, Missouri applied to join the Union as a slave state
  • Free states opposed to Missouri joining because it would tilt the balance
  • This led to angry debates with North and South Congressmen against each other
  • In 1820, a Compromise was formed
  • To balance it out, the new free state of Maine was created
  • Henceforward, no more slavery in the Louisiana Purchase territory - south of the line, slavery could exist
  • The compromise eased tension but issues raised 1819-20 alarmed many elder statesmen
