  • Censorship - the practice of suppressing and limiting access to materials considered to be obscene, offensive or a threat to security. People may also be restricted in their speech by censorship laws
  • Discrimination- the act of treating someone differently based on prejudice
  • extremism- is believing in and supporting ideas that are very far from what most people consider correct or reasonable
  • Human rights - are the basic entitlements of all human beings, afforded to them simply because they are human

  • Social justice - is promoting a fair society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity. ensuring that everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources
  • Religious and non-religious believers consider human rights as an entitlement for all people. In many religious traditions teachings from sacred texts and the examples of founders and leaders give direction to how believers should promote human rights
  • Social justice involves realising that injustices exist and if not checked will grow and widen; and learning how to promote equality while encouraging and celebrating diversity. It also involves understanding that rights also carry responsibilities
  • The dignity of human rights - Christianity
    • Belief that all humans are created in the image of god ( genesis 1:26-27)
    • Jesus showed in his teachings and practices all life should be valued and treated with respect e.g. visiting the lepers, parable of the good samaritan
    • Teachings from pope francis in Evangeli Gaudium refers to the importance of caring for the homeless and elderly
    • Every person is sacred and of worth is a core Christian belief
    • Each person should be treated with selfless, unconditional love - agapé
  • Dignity of human life - judaism
    • Belief that all humans are created in the image of god (genesis 1:26-27)
    • Teachings from the talmud regarding the actions of humankind should be like those of god
    • A belief that insulting another human is like insulting god
    • Importance of all jews to preform tzedekah (charity and justice) to other human beings
  • Agapé in action -
    Following the action of jesus many christian charities express agape, e.g. helping at salvation army hostels; working at church food banks; volunteering for st vincent de paul
  • Tzedekah in action -
    Through tzedekah jews should practise charity giving and promoting social justice, e.g. preforming mitzvot for others, fundraising and volunteering for charities such as Tzedek
  • Conflict between personal convictions and the law -
    Issue = race equality
    • Personal conviction = all people should be treated equally as all are made in the image of god
    • Law = in america people were segregated with separate schools, seating areas on buses, etc
    • Action = martin luther king led non-violent action, e.g. protest marches, made speeches, ect.
  • Prejudice and discrimination
    • Prejudice is to do wjth our thoughts and what we think
    • Whereas discrimination is the actions or behaviour that arises from those thoughts which results in people being treated unfairly and unjustly
