  • Osborne Paragraph 1: Osborne represents the pacifist attitudes towards World war 1

    - "Think of it all as romantic, it helps" - Act 1 talking to Raleigh - Osborne uses this to cope with his pacifist attitude towards war to try and romanticise it for his own sake
    - "I wish I knew how to fight a battle like those boys of mine" - Act 2 Scene 1 - Osborne is peaceful and isn't able to show the aggression and violence a soldier needs to survive
    Context : Conscientious objectors during the war were punished and outcasted from society for objecting to the war, Osborne tries to cope with what would seem to be "cowardice" at the time
  • Osborne paragraph 1: Osbornes death during the raid acts as a catalyst for Stanhopes outburst of rage

    Context: Stanhope's outburst of rage that has been building inside him can be related to the toxic masculinity at the time, men, and especially officers during WW1, were not able to show emotion as it was a sign of weakness
  • Osborne paragraph 3: Osborne euphemises war and lies to others to benefit the mental state of his comrades

    Context: Osborne here is clearly trying to fight back against the depressing conditions that took heavy tolls on men during World war one, Osborne is aware of their inevitable deaths, which is why he tries to benefit their lives so much now even if he needs to lie
