Each sediment cell is considered a management zone
In the SMP, what is considered for each management zone?
Natural Processes
Human Activity
Management decision
What is the idea behind SMP?
Just focusing on a particular cell, as there is believed to be little impact on neighboring cells. They consider them a closed system
Who recommends SMP use?
DEFRA
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
What are the 4 options for a SMP?
Hold the line
Advance the Line
Managed Retreat/ strategic realignment
Do nothing/ no active intervention
What does hold the line mean?
Maintaining the current shoreline position usually with hard engineering techniques
What does advance the line mean?
Extending the coastline out to sea by encouraging the build up of a wider beach. Uses beach nourishment and groynes
What does managed retreat mean?
Allowing the coastline to move further inland in a controlled way, usually creating salt marshes to protect the land behind
What is the do nothing approach?
Letting nature do what it wants and allowing coastal erosion and flooding of low lying land. not maintaining the defences
What is the aim of an ICZM?
Establish sustainable levels of economic and social activity
WHat does the ICZM approach mean for managment style?
It takes huge areas of the coast and manages them as a whole rather than on a town by town basis.
Why could the ICZM approach be better?
It considers that coastal systems are not closed and that one change somewhere will lead to a change somewhere else.
2013 EU ICZM initiative
Basically is an approach that will balance environmental health, ecological health, offshore energy production, tourism, trade and mitigation of climate change
