  • ·         Response order is important - Allen and Levine (1969) compared confederate answering first (with right answer), or 4th (after all other wrong answers), real participant always answered 5th (last). Support was significantly more effective in position 1 than position 4 because in confirming the participant’s own judgement, produces an initial commitment to the correct response that endures even though other group members disagree.
    • ·         Real life example Rosenstrasse protest – women defied the authority of the Gestapo.
  • ·         Historical trend – Twenge et al (2004) people are more external than they used to be. This could be due to increasing levels of alienation experienced
    • ·         Spector (1983) found a significant correlation between LOC and predisposition to normative social influence with externals more likely to conform to this form of influence. No such relationship was found for LOC and informational social influence.
