Molecular typing

Cards (5)

  • Why should we use molecular typing systems?
    • Greater discrimination- organisms have many molecules, the more molecules analyses, the greater the discrimination
    • Differentiates between lots of molecules- nucleic acids, proteins, lipopolysaccharides
  • Molecular typing is typically used to differentiate between members of the same species
  • Molecular typing is split into two categories: pattern based typing and sequence based typing
  • Pattern based typing includes:
    1. Plasmid profiling
    2. Ribotyping
    3. Pulse-field gel electrophoresis
    4. RAPD
  • Sequence based typing includes:
    1. Multi Locus Sequence typing
    2. Whole genome sequencing
