WORKING MEMORY MODEL

    Cards (13)

    • Central executive (CE)
The central executive has a supervisory role as it monitors incoming data. It has limited processing capacity and does NOT store information
    • Phonological loop (PL)
Division of the CE. Controls auditory information and preserves the order of information.
    • Phonological store (PS)
Division of the PL. Stores the words you hear.
    • Articulatory process (AP)
Division of the PL. Allows maintenance rehearsal - repeating words and sounds in a loop and its capacity is 2 seconds.
    • Visuo-spatial sketchpad (VSS)
Division of the CE. Stores visual and/or spatial information when needed. Limited capacity of 3/4 objects (Baddeley)
    • Inner scribe (IS)
Division of the VSS. Records arrangement of objects into a visual field.
    • Visual cache (VC)
Division of the VSS. Stores visual data.
    • Episodic buffer (EB)
Division of the CE. Temporary store for information and links WMM to LTM and wider cognitive processes such as perception.
    • Strength (1)
✅Patient KFphonological loop was damaged, but VSS was intact.
    • Strength (2)
✅Word length effect – easier to remember shorter words.
    • Strength (3)
✅Dual task performance support the separate existence of the VSS.
    • Limitation (1)
      ❌Other cognitive impairments too.
    • Limitation (2)
❌CE is the most important part but little is known about how it operates.
