Ghost of the Christmas Yet to Come

Cards (3)

  • Phantom [S4] - "The phantom slowly, gravely, silently approached." "Scrooge bent down upon his knee" "seemed to scatter gloom and mystery"
    • Tricolon of adverbs are used to reflect the slow and painful demise of the poor due to social ignorance. Ghost wants scrooge to suffer the same horror he's created for others and understand the suffering of hell if he didn't change.
    • Verb 'bent' indicates that Scrooge is becoming submissive - realised he has no power - he's humbled and pleading for help - mirrors what people like him did to the poor.
    • Abstract nouns 'Gloom' and 'Mystery' - unavoidable
  • Phantom [S4] - "It was shrouded in a deep black garment, which concealed its head" "Phantom"
    • Personal pronoun 'it', name Phantom and lack of dialogue create an eerie atmosphere + tensions and it is a stark contrast to the other ghosts.
    • Verb shrouded symbolises being covered up - ghost has no identity and is hiding wealth/social issues.
    • Black has connotations of darkness, corruption and evil.
  • Phantom [S4] - "I hope to live to be another man from what i was"
    • The fact that Scrooge is hoping to restart his life again shows he has a lack of power and perhaps is considering that he has lost the change for change. Because of shadows he has seen, such a Tiny Tim dying he is willing to accept the lessons - he is desperate for a better future and destiny. Scrooge now sees this change/transformation as a possession - he now craves human interaction and approval. "he became a good friend, as good a master."
    • He wants to redeem himself through his fear of a lot of different things
