    • Fairy tale starting is to indicate to the reader to suspends their disbelief as to the fantastical elements of the story, in order that they benefit from the moral message.
    • Pathetic fallacy. Christmas eve is supposed to be a joyful and loving time yet Scrooge treats it as any other day of the year. Foreshadows dark events that may take place.
    • Alternatively, scrooge is blocking light.
  • Pathetic Fallacy [S5] - "Golden sunlight; Heavenly sky; sweet fresh air; merry bells. Oh, glorious. Glorious!"
    • In Stave one, the weather in London has been used to reflect Scrooge; a form of pathetic fallacy. It was gloomy, grey, miserable - like scrooge.
    • The weather has changed with him. It reflects the positive mood in him and the true Christmas spirit.
