Digestion

• Salivary glands produce amylase in the saliva
• Stomach pummels the food with its muscular walls and it produces to protease enzyme pepsin
• The stomach produces hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria and to give the right pH for protease to work
• Liver produces bile, which neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats
• Pancreas produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes. It releases these into the small intestine.
• Gall bladder stores bile until its released into the small intestine
• Large intestine absorbs excess water from food
• Small intestine produces protease, amylase and lipase
• Small intestine also absorbs digested food out of the digestive system and into the blood
• Rectum is where faeces are stored
