STRESS AND STRAIN

Cards (6)

  • Stress is a load or force acting per unit area.
  • Tension or Tensile stress- force acting in a such a direction to increase the length or pulling material a part. Is the result of two acting in opposite direction on the same line
  • Compression or Compressive stress- force acting in such a direction as to decrease the length or tend to compress or push the material together. Is the result of two forces acting in opposite direction on the same line.
  • SHEAR FORCE
When two external parallel forces act in opposite directions on any part of a structure to break it apart or shear it, the forces are known as shearing forces and are measured in tonnes. Shearing stress is, therefore, the stress that may break or shear the structure apart.
  • Strain is the distortion in a material due to stress.
  • Bending Moment is the amount of bending caused to the ship's hull by external forces. Bending moments are measured in tonne- metres.
