  • Pouring
    A technique which involves spilling of different colors of paint on top of one another from a container onto the canvas to produce swirling patterns
  • Dripping
    A technique creating an abstract art in which paint is dropped and flowed after poured onto the canvas
  • Sgraffito
    A technique where a base color is put down, allowed to dry, then a contrasting layer is painted on top. While the second layer is still wet, a tool is used to scratch the surface, exposing the bottom layer

    A technique by loading the brush with paint and test it on another surface to begin with in order to ensure that you have the right quantity of paint to create fine uneven lines. A great technique to add texture and highlights to paintings; and dimension to an underpainting
  • Glazing
    A technique achieved using very thin layers of color in order to build up depth and complexity. It is used to create a lighter or brighter effect where glazes are applied on top of opaque colors which have been dried
  • Scumbling
    A painting technique that creates smoky effects and subtle blends of color which involves broken layers of paint so that the bottom layers shine through. Dry brush or cloth and medium and heavy paints works for this technique. Its key that layers are dry as you continue to scumble
  • Underpainting
    A painting technique where an image is sketched in paint directly on the canvas, rather than using a pencil. The underpainting is generally completely painted over so that it isn't visible in the final product
  • Blowing
    A technique creating an abstract art in which paint is poured onto the canvas and air blown using a tool such as hair blower or straw
  • Wash
    A technique which allows you to build up transparent layers of colors for a watercolor look. It is created by how much water you add to the color paint/s used
