Plants

Cards (9)

  • Xylem tissue
transports water and minerals through plant
  • Phloem
transports sugars froms leaves to roots
  • What are some differences between xylem and phloem tissue?
Xylem is one way, dead outer cells, no end walls and opposite to phloem
  • Explain the extracellular pathway (intake of water)
Water diffuses into roots and once reaches hydrophobic Casparian strip, water is forced to enter cells so plasma membranes can selectively transport substances to xylem
  • Explain cytoplasmic pathway (intake of water)

Ions and water passively diffuse into cytoplasm or by active transport in root hair cells
  • Transpiration
Process of water movement in plants and evaporation (by stomata)
  • Stomata
Holes on plants leafs where water is released into air
  • How does transpiration work?

Water is transported into the roots and then into the xylem. Forces of cohesion & adhesion cause the water surfaces, evaporates from their surfaces and leaves the plant through the stomata.
  • Factors affecting transpiration rate
Temperature, wind, humid, time of day
