Mixtures

Cards (9)

  • Mixtures
Lots of separate things all mixed together
  • Mixtures are Easily Separated-Not Like Compounds
  • Mixtures
    • Contain at least two different elements or compounds
    • There aren't any chemical bonds between the different parts of a mixture
  • Mixtures
    • Air (a mixture of gases, mainly nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and argon)
    • Crude oil (a mixture of different length hydrocarbon molecules)
  • Methods to separate mixtures

    1. Filtration
    2. Crystallisation
    3. Simple distillation
    4. Fractional distillation
    5. Chromatography
  • The methods to separate mixtures are all physical methods
  • This means they don't involve any chemical reactions, and don't form any new substances
  • Properties of a mixture

    • Just a mixture of the properties of the separate parts
    • The chemical properties of a substance aren't changed by it being part of a mixture
  • Mixture of iron powder and sulfur powder

    • Will show the properties of both iron and sulfur
    • Will contain grey magnetic bits of iron and bright yellow bits of sulfur
